About the event

Step back in time to 1779 and explore the Hugh Torance House and Store and its grounds. The historic Hugh Torance House and Store is the oldest-standing store in North Carolina and one of Mecklenburg County’s few surviving 18th-century structures.  Come early or plan to stay after your tour, the Hugh Torance House and Store is open from 1:00-4:00, with the tour beginning at 2:00 and lasting one hour. In addition to soaking up the history at the site, the Store offers local honey, local artisan crafts, books, gifts, and more.  The site is adjacent to the brick National Register 1831 Greek Revival home of James Torrance, son of Hugh and Isabella Torance. Known as Cedar Grove, it remains a private residence.

This is a free tour but donations are most welcome.  The Hugh Torance House and Store is a 501(c)(3) non-profit fully supported by the community. Thanks to your donation, HEARTS Circle memberships, and support from local businesses, we are excited to continue growing and sharing more history in the future.
